With the new MU-M/S Vario PLUS side flail mower, Müthing once again underlines its expertise when it comes to versatility and ease of use in mulching and landcare technology. The innovative headland function for use on flat areas significantly extends the machine’s range of applications – from professional ditch and embankment maintenance through to efficient use on the flat.
The MU-M/S Vario PLUS, which is designed for tractors from 160 to 200 hp, was presented for the first time at Agritechnica 2023. The implement is available with working widths of 2.20 m, 2.50 m and 2.80 m and has an integrated, switchable headland function for use on the flat. At the touch of a button it is possible to switch between the application areas of ditch and embankment maintenance as well as classic use on the flat. In order to maximise the working efficiency and minimise the turning points at the headland, the flail mower housing can be quickly and easily raised and lowered in flat land mode with just one control unit without having to actuate further control units or the hoisting unit. It is particularly worth emphasising that the MU-SOFA® system, integrated as standard, is also activated when the machine is configured to operate on the flat. This hydropneumatic weight transfer system ensures that the flail mower is guided uniformly in height across its entire working width and thus adapts perfectly to uneven ground. This also minimises the pressure on the support roller and thus the wear. The implement features the well-known, patented swivelling support roller as standard, which enables the user to choose between spreading the mulch in front of or behind the support roller. The robust Starinth® rear roller bearing system ensures a long service life of the bearings. The combination of a mode for flat areas and the weight transfer system compensates for the disadvantages of a classic side flail mower when used on the flat.
By combining the new side flail mower with a working width of up to 2.80 m and a front-mounted flail mower, working widths of up to 5.50 m can be achieved. By adjusting the Vario cutting bar, which is fitted as standard, the shredding rate and the suction effect can be infinitely varied for crops such as rape, grain stubble, maize, catch crops or grassland. This allows the user to individually adjust the degree of shredding of the mulch based on their requirements.

Other features that underline the unique qualities of this machine include a transport folding system over the dead centre of the machine to ensure uniform weight distribution during road transport, hydropneumatic belt tensioning and completion of the stone projection test in accordance with ISO/WD 17101-2, a feature that Müthing machines are known for.
The unique technical and functional design of this flail mower resulted in the sale of 200 machines within a few months. The 200th machine sold will be handed over as part of a ceremony at Agritechnica in Hanover.
